Mastering Your Schedule: Taking Charge of Your Diary for Success

The saying "don't let the tail wag the dog" holds particularly true in the world of personal training, where the booking of clients can sometimes dictate the trainer's schedule.

In this post, we're sharing some ideas that might seem a bit controversial and inflexible, but they've proven effective for both trainers and clients.

Set Clear Boundaries: Define Your Working Week

It's common for personal trainers to leave their diaries open, allowing clients to book sessions at any time. However, this lack of boundaries can lead to less-than-ideal working hours for the trainer. Whether you're just starting out or have an established clientele, take control of your diary by defining your working week. Dictate when you're available, rather than letting clients dictate your schedule.

Example: Establishing Working Days and Time Slots

Decide on specific working days and time slots, such as Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 07:00 – 10:00 and 13:00 – 16:00. This clarity makes it easier to allocate slots to new clients while maintaining control over your working week.

Firm Policies: Handling Session Changes

When a client requests to move a session, offer them available slots within the same week. Avoid rolling sessions over to the following week or allowing them to accumulate. Clearly state this policy in your terms and conditions. While occasional changes are acceptable, rolling sessions over disrupts your schedule and impacts your income.

Professionalism Over Permissiveness: Gaining Client Respect

Some personal trainers may worry that implementing such policies isn't client-friendly and could lead to client loss. However, professionals seeking personal training services often respect and understand the value of another professional's time and expertise. It's crucial for trainers to respect their own time and financial well-being, preventing the "tail from wagging the dog."

Firm Bookings, Happy Clients: Balancing Respect and Income

Taking charge of your booking system not only gains respect from clients but also ensures a steady income and maintains your sanity. It's about finding a balance that respects both your time and your clients' commitments.
